Runaway Bay, once though of as the northern end of the
Gold Coast, is really now considered more a part of the central
Gold Coast. The suburb is home to some of the Gold Coast's most popular canal living thanks to bridge-free access to the fabulous Broadwater which allows yachts uninterrupted access to the Pacific Ocean. The Gold Coast Broadwater and Seaway is at your back door making this a popular area for boating. There are a number of public boat ramps and a wet and dry marina. Runaway Bay was conceived in 1967 when a 182 development site was purchased by Lae Enterprises. Development started in 1972. Runaway Bay is North of Biggera Waters and South of Hollywell, it's Eastern boundary is the Broadwater.

Runaway Bay Hotel was one of the first buildings to be built in the area, it was first built in the early seventies. There is one school in Runaway Bay,
