Mermaid Beach is an exclusive beach front suburb on the
Gold Coast in South-East Queensland, Australia. According to the 2006 Census, Mermaid Beach has a population of 5,751. The suburb is bounded to the west by the man made canals of adjacent Mermaid Waters and to the east by the Pacific Ocean. To the north is the suburb of
Broadbeach, to the south Miami. The Gold Coast Highway is the main arterial road passing through Mermaid Beach. Mermaid Beach receives its name from the cutter HMS Mermaid. Explorer John Oxley sailed aboard the Mermaid in 1823 when he discovered the nearby Tweed and Brisbane rivers. The
Mermaid Beach Surf Lifesaving Club was established by United States Army personnel stationed here during World War II. The Gold Coast Ocean way travels along Hedges Avenue, often referred to as "millionaires mile". Essentially a new name for the former district of Robina, Mermaid Beach was first created as an electorate for the 2009 state election. Its inaugural member is Ray Stevens, previously the member for Robina.
