The name Guanaba came from the name ‘Gugugan’ which was the name of the local group of the Yugumbeh people who lived around Beenleigh. It is thought that these people may have at times resided near the Upper Coomera area. Europeans first settled in Guanaba in the early 1900s and in 1920 a school was opened. Most of the inhabitants of the area at this time were involved in the timber and logging industries.
