The origin of the town's name comes from the Aboriginal word for small owls, "Caningera”, hence it is sometimes referred to as the 'valley of the owls'.  It’s believed the most notable owl found in the area is the Southern Boobook, which appears in various logos & symbols associated with the area. In 2005 the Post Office released a limited-release frank featuring the Boobook Owl.

History

The town owes its existence to the timber industry and once boasted one of the largest stands of timber in the colony.  By the 1940s most of the timber had been cut and sawmills were closing. Following this era the area became popular for beef cattle and dairy farming.  The historic Lahey's Tramway Tunnel is the only evidence of the past sawmilling activities in the area.  From the 2nd of July 1915 until the 1st of July 1955 Queensland Railways connected the town with the Beaudesert raliway line at Logan Village.  The local creek is a tributary of the Albert River.  The slopes around the township are steep and forested with some cleared farm land and rural homes in the valley areas.

Tourist Attractions

Regarded as the gateway to the World Heritage Listed Lamington National Park - O'Reilly's, O'Reilly's Lost World & Binna Burra Mountain Lodge resorts, it's a great place to stay and explore the surrounding district.  Lamington National Park covers 20,590ha and boasts extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range, which allow visitors to explore the area's forests, creeks and waterfalls.  The township is a meeting place for hang-gliders, para gliders, bird watchers & bush walkers who visit the area.
